Rockchip's Tablet Does 3D Without Glasses
Chris Brandrick, PC WorldAug 27, 2010 6:10 am
It looks like we'll soon see more gadgets that can do 3D without forcing users to wear glasses. Chinese manufacturer Rockchip recently showcased a prototype tablet device that can display 3D video and images without requiring any special spectacles, according to Engadget
Details about the unreleased tablet, dubbed the Supernova X1, are currently hard to come by, with nary a spec sheet available, so specifics regarding how the devices' 3D output actually works are also unknown--beyond the fact that it doesn't require eyewear.
Engadget's Chinese site offers a little more in the way of details; their report says that the Supernova X1 will require video "to be 'processed' in some way"--whatever that means--to produce the 3D effect. The report goes on to compare the device to Nintendo's upcoming 3DS handheld, detailing that Rockchip's mystery tablet will let you adjust the 3D effect or disable it entirely.
Rockchip's Supernova X1 is currently only a prototype, with more solid details expected to be announced at next month's IFA. But devices like this, along with Nintendo's 3DS and Toshiba's rumored TV efforts are making one thing clear: Glasses-free 3D is coming sooner than originally thought.
Would you like a 3D-capable tablet, especially one which works without the need for eyewear? Let us know in the comments.

The prototype tablet apparently can display 3D video and images without the need for any special 3D goggles, and that the device allows a user to adjust the 3D or turn it off completely.

Slot machines beat consoles to 3D

Slot Machines Beat Nintendo To Glasses-Free 3D GamingI heard from a reader who has already experienced his own glasses-free 3D gaming... at a casino. I've not seen this myself; I'm not sure I want to.A company called IGT has been offering 3D slot machines since late 2008, I learned, following up on the reader tip. These Reel Depth slots have genies pop from the slot machine screen or the plant from Little Shop of Horrors (because there is a Little Shop of Horrors slot machine, of course. Here's one not exactly breathless report from December '08:One casino, the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino, is turning to 3D slot machines to try and lure customers. They feel that people are sick of simply hearing bells go off and that customers are ready for the next step in entertainment from their slot machines. The IGT website simulates the 3D effect, but can't show it of course, no more than Nintendo could show its glasses-free 3D tech over the Internet when it was unveiled at E3 this past June. You could watch the simulation at IGT's site, though be warned that the page that hosts the clip is running a Javascript that chugged my browser.I know some people consider 3D to be irrelevant for video games, but for gambling? I can't tell how this improves the experience. But I haven't tried it.Readers, I am not near the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Southern California nor any other casino that has these glasses-free 3D slot machines. Are you? If you are of age, feel free to check those 3D slots out and let us know if they're any good. We are not responsible for loss of income. Is the video game industry really two years behind the slot machine industry? Did those guys have analog sticks before video games too? And touch screens? What's next?source: kotaku.comHave a question for the HD Guru3D?HD GURU3D | EmailCopyright ©2010 HD Guru3D Inc. If Nintendo or Sharp might try and claim the prize of the manufacturer's race for glasses-free 3D, they would both be wrong. The sordid world of gambling with its huge profit potential actually beat them to it back in 2008
A company called IGT has been offering 3D slot machines since then, apparently. And a casino, the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino, is turning to 3D slot machines to try and lure potential customers to try and upgrade the bells and bling of older slot machines.

3D gaming has been pinned as a potential driver of the 3D revolution, but perhaps support will come from more dubious industries such as gambling and adult entertainment, as a 3D adult film is currently being shot in Hong Kong too.
