Technology companies strengthen research efforts aimed at future smartphones
Intel and Nokia have announced the creation of a new lab to be located in Finland to jointly explore 3D technologies for smartphone applications.
The new lab will be located at the Center for Internet Excellence at the University of Oulu according to a report by DailyFinance. The venture aims to find ways of representing smartphone user's trends towards social networking and media consumption.
"There's an opportunity for this joint innovation center to shape this, in terms of the synthesis of virtual and physical world and location-based services," said Intel Labs director Martin Curley.
Intel and Nokia had formerly announced cooperation on software for improving systems in a variety of computer applications and not just smartphones. The two companies have also been collaborating on the MeeGo operating system which is expected to power future Nokia smartphone devices.
The joint venture appears to be aimed at finding interface mechanisms to exploit 3D hardware increasingly prevalent in smartphones. Many smartphones carry such hardware but user interfaces have generally remained traditionally 2D.

ViewSonic's 3D announcements
ViewSonic is unveiling a 3D camcorder and a portable 3D television at IFA, along with additions to its monitor, media streamer and eBook reader ranges.
ViewSonic, who will also be showing off two ViewPad tablets, believes that 3D is a key technology for consumers and is hoping to cash in on the halo effect of the increase in 3D TV.
"ViewSonic are focused on providing a full 3D experience, allowing our users to not only view 3D in the best possible way, but now create their own affordable content." said James Coulson, marketing manager, ViewSonic Europe.
3D simple
"We believe by making 3D simple to use, whilst providing a complete solution, we can introduce 3D technology to consumers who were hesitant about new technology or concerned about the cost."
The 3D camcorder is capable of recording at 720p, and also has an integrated 3D display – with a UK release date pending but a price tag set at £199.
Also on display will be 3D digital camera and a 3D digital photo frame, along with, intriguingly, a portable 3D TV.
"In addition to the new tablet range, visitors to the ViewSonic stand will be able to try first-hand a range of products, including the new VPC220, a fully all-in-one PC; the VMP74, an award winning HD media-streamer and the VEB625, a touch screen eBook reader with wi-fi connectivity," adds ViewSonic's release.

German telco Deutsche Telekom and pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland are negotiating with national football association Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) about a 3D variation of their live coverage of Germany’s domestic football league games.
News of the proposed deal was confirmed by spokesmen of both Telekom and the league to German news magazine “Focus” who also revealed that DFL is preparing the tender packages for the new TV rights period from 2013. The tender will already commence next year - one year earlier than the previous rights tenders.
According to the magazine, the process was moved forward not only to have more time for discussions with the federal anti-trust authority Bundeskartellamt and the EU Commission, but also to gain more planning security for the football clubs and Sky Deutschland.
The subscription broadcaster is the most source of revenue for the league, currently paying around €240m each year for the live coverage rights.

Verizon demos 1Gbps broadband

E-mail Print
Verizon has completely a field trial on its fiber-optic FiOS network, in which it delivered bandwidth approaching 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) to business customer in Taunton, Massachusetts.
The demonstration, conducted in June via Verizon’s gigabit passive optical network (GPON), was designed to show that today’s FiOS equipment can support higher bandwidth–including 1Gbps throughput–without major changes to the network, the company said. The GPON platform, developed by Motorola, supports bandwidth of 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream to customers connected to the passive optical network.
Verizon’s point here is that FiOS is more than capable of delivering throughput that far exceeds current maximum speeds. For consumers, today’s FiOS Internet tops out at 50Mbps downstream.
“This kind of bandwidth capacity will provide Verizon the ability to continue to meet FiOS customers’ needs by offering more bandwidth to support services such as 3DTV, ultra HDTV, multiplayer gaming and HD video conferencing,” said Brian Whitton, executive director of Verizon’s technology group, in a statement.
The actual throughput speeds in the field trial were 925 megabits per second (Mbps) to a local server, and more than 800Mbps to Verizon’s regional test speed servers. The existing FiOS service was left in place, and the trial didn’t degrade the customer’s voice, data, or video services, the company claims.
Verizon has big plans for its FiOS brand. It’s reportedly working with Motorola to develop a tablet device that would allow customers to watch FiOS digital TV. All of this is great news for Wealth TV, who has set a Jan 2011 deadline to go 24 hour 3D programming, including 2 projects currently in production with  and Al Caudullo Productions,  WOW 3D And Markets &Tastes 3D.

Good news for thirsty broadband users and the future of 3D content streaming this week as Verizon became the latest provider to push the broadband boundaries in the US when it delivered bandwidth of almost 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) in Taunton, Massachusetts during a field trial of its fiber-optic FIOS Network.

The demonstration, conducted in June via Verizon’s gigabit passive optical network (GPON), demonstrated the ability of FiOS equipment to deliver the upped bandwidth without major changes to the network, (ie. at no extra cost), the company said.
