US Open Tennis to get served up in 3D

The World Cup isn’t the only major international sporting event to be broadcast in 3D this year. CBS Sports and Panasonic have teamed up to do the same with the U.S. Open.
Under the deal, CBS will broadcast 3D versions of the matches set to take place during Labor Day weekend (September 3-6) and the weekend of the finals (September 10-12). Tennis (and 3D) aficionados will be able to find these special versions on DirecTV channel 103.
Panasonic will also be setting up a few 3D showcases at the U.S. Open and in retail stores nationwide. (Best Buy got a plug, so if you’re not sure where to go, call your local store to find out for sure.) The deal is in place for three years, thus you have another chance to check this out in case you miss it this year.
Sports broadcasting has truly embraced 3D over the last few months. While it is still limited to larger premium cable or satellite channel packages, soccer, football and now tennis can all be seen in 3D. But with the additional requirement of 3D glasses, it will be difficult to gather groups to watch sporting events until 3D becomes the norm in the way HD has.

Forget about Avatar in 3D -- thanks to software maker Roxio, now your home movies can feature grandma, the kids, and all your friends in eye-popping 3D. Roxio announced Tuesday the latest versions of its all-in-one media software suite, Creator 2011 and Creator Pro 2011.
Included in the new software rollout is the capability to create, edit, and share 3D photos and video. You can also use Creator to transform your regular 2D images and movies into 3D creations, according to Roxio.
Creator 2011 is designed to work with most 3D systems such as 3D-enabled cameras, HDTVs and computer displays. If you don't have a fancy 3D system, Roxio has included a pair of standard red-and-blue 3D glasses so that at least one person in your house can take advantage of Creator's 3D goodness. Creator 2011 also includes instructions on how to create 3D images using your old 2D camera equipment.
Creator 2011 Specs
As of Tuesday, you can purchase Creator 2011 from Roxio's Website, and the vendor says the software suite will be on store shelves by early September. The standard version costs $100 and Creator Pro 2011 will set you back $130, but Roxio offers a $20 mail-in rebate for Creator at Roxio.com. Creator 2011 is available for Windows 7, Vista, and XP (SP2 or SP3) users. See Roxio's Website for specific system requirements.
Roxio's Creator is a multipurpose software suite that lets you edit images and video, as well as burn CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs (Pro version only). You can also use Creator to upload videos directly to YouTube including 3D videos.
If you plan to use Creator to create the next Avatar, you might be a little disappointed, according to PC World Contributing Editor Harry McCracken. Writing on Technologizer, McCracken says colors in Creator 2011 "looked washed out." But, overall, he says the experience of using Creator 2011 is still fun. You can check out a 3D video McCracken created on YouTube. Just make sure you have your 3D glasses handy.

One solution to the 3D content gap is user-generated media, and software-developer Roxio has helped the cause by adding 3D capability to their latest all-in-one home editing suite - Creator 2011 and Creator Pro 2011.

With the software, users can apparently create, edit, and share 3D photos and video, as well as convert regular 2D images and movies into 3D creations in a process that is garnering plenty of attention of the wrong kind in movie forums, but it is designed here for a much smaller scale of production.

Sharp to unveil e-reader, with 3D future

Sharp's e-reader ready to 'rival the iPad' by year's end, may have a 3D future
By Vlad Savov  posted Aug 25th 2010 3:41AM
Sharp is going to launch its brand new e-reader in Japan this fall with US retail availability to follow by the end of the year. Riveting stuff, isn't it? Well, the company's President Mikio Katayama does his best to spice things up by proposing this device will aim "to rival the iPad," and it may well sport a color LCD if earlier indications still hold true, but what's really got us hot under the collar is the potential for 3D down the line. Katayama claims to have witnessed great enthusiasm for 3D -- particularly when it comes to games -- and posits it as a likely future direction for this new ebook reader. Multifunctional devices are what people want, he says, and since Sharp already has a 3D smartphone in the pipeline and a glasses-free 3D tablet display in the lab, we can't see many technical hurdles to the realization of his vision. Let's just hope his depth perception is accurate when it comes to measuring the interest in three-dee.

After promising a 3D-enabled smartphone by the end of the year earlier this month, Sharp have continued their big 2010 finish with the announcement of an e-reader that is said to have a promising 3D future as well.

The company's president, Mikio Katayama is not hiding the high ambitions of the company, saying the reader will "rival the iPad."

Not to be left out of the 3D camera race, Sony have unveiled some further models that, while only housing a single lens, can create a 3D effect.

The new models, the a560 and a580 DSLRs, are able to simulate a 3D effect thanks to the processor on board - the technology that we saw offered on the TX9 and WX5 models.
