An Israeli company has demonstrated a system that can transmit 3D high-def video wirelessly, joining the driving ranks of bigger electronic manufacturers including Hitachi, Sony and Samsung.
Amimon Inc showed the wireless data transmission from a Blu-ray player to a 3D TV via the use of the WHDI (wireless high-definition interface) standard on the 5GHz band at 24 frames per second at the demonstration.
3D video data requires double the bandwidth as normal video as it provides a stream for each eye, so doubt has been cast over the ability to keep the frame rate high while transmitting wirelessly.
The system is planned to be used for devices that can wirelessly connect to 3D LCD TVs and 3D Blu-ray disc recorders, doing away with pesky cabling, and will no doubt catch on if the technology proves viable.
